About Lil Hardin Armstrong
Popularly known as “Hot Miss Lil”, Lil Hardin was one of the prominent feminine figures in jazz music. She was married to fellow jazz singer, Louis Armstrong and the couple performed together several times.
Background
Armstrong was born in Memphis, Tennessee. After her father died, she was raised by her mother. As a young child, Armstrong initially was taught hymns, gospel, and classical music. When she grew older, she developed an interest in popular music.
Career
She first worked as a sheet music demonstrator in a music store. She later worked with several prominent Black bands in Chicago, often performing with Sugar Johnny’s Creole Orchestra and Freddie Keppard’s Band. She also had her own band. In the later years of her career, she went solo and eventually ventured into clothes making.
Death & Legacy
Armstrong passed away shortly after the death of Louis. In 2004, the Chicago Park District named a park in her honor.
