About Lewis R. Freeman
Lewis Ransome Freeman was a famous explorer, war correspondent, and writer who spent the bulk part of his life traveling. He wrote about many of his adventures in books, including "Down the Yellowstone" and "Discovering South America."
Early Years
He graduated from Stanford University in 1898. While in school, he was active in a number of sports, including football, baseball, tennis, and track. He prevailed at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament in 1903, winning both the singles and doubles titles.
Career
He spent a few years after college traveling around the world. During the Russo-Japanese War and World War I (WWI), he worked as a war correspondent. From 1917 - 1918, he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
He concentrated on writing after the First World War, producing nine books between 1918 and 1922.
In 1923, he participated in an US geological survey expedition to the Grand Canyon as a photographer and contributed photos for a special edition of Rudyard Kipling's "The Feet of the Young Men."
Some of his most famous publications include “To Kiel in the Hercules” (1919) and “Discovering South America” (1937).
Death
In 1955, he retired to Pasadena, California, and died in 1960.
