About Levon Aronian
Levon Aronian was a celebrated Armenian-American chess player who in 2000 was awarded the ‘Grandmaster’ title by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). He began showing glimpses of his talent in 1994 when he was named the winner of the Under 12 category at the World Youth Chess Championship.
Career highlights
He made his first appearance at the FIDE World Chess Championship in 2004, two years after winning the Armenian Chess Championship, and the World Junior Championship. In 2005, he won the FIDE World Cup, and repeated the achievement in 2017. He was also crowned the winner of the FIDE Grand Prix which was held between 2008 and 2010.
International career
Aronian has represented Armenia in a number of competitions. Before announcing his intention to join the United States in 2021, he had been a member of the Armenian team in six Chess Olympiads. He helped them to win gold medals at the 2006, 2008, and 2012 editions of the competition.
Family
He spent his early years with his parents Grigory Leontievich Aronov and Seda Avagyan. He was introduced to the game by his sister called Lilit. In 2017, he married fellow chess player Arianne Caoili who unfortunately died in 2020. He has also been in a relationship with a lady called Ani Ayvazyan.
Education
He studied at the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture.
Honors
He won Armenia’s “Best Sportsman” award in 2005. He was a recipient of the Order of St. Mesrop Mashtots accolade in 2012.
Trivia
He was nicknamed the "David Beckham of chess" by CNN in 2016.
He was initially coached by Melikset Khachiyan, before he teamed up with Ashot Nadanian in 2011.
