About Leopold Mozart
Regarded as one of the greatest composers in history, Leopold Mozart began his music career in 1740 as a violinist to the Count of Thurn-Valsassina and Taxis, Johann Baptist. Later that year, he released his first musical piece which was a “six Trio Sonatas, Opus 1”.
Despite his numerous works, Mozart was best known as the trainer of his son Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who went on to complete over 800 works. In 1756, he published arguably the greatest violin textbook in history which was entitled “Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule”.
Family
He was born to Anna Maria Sulzer and the famous bookbinder Johann Georg Mozart. His wife Anna Maria Pertl died in 1778. Aside from Wolfgang, he had six other children including musician Maria Anna Walburga Ignatia.
Education
The renowned composer briefly studied at St. Salvator Lyzeum before moving to the University of Salzburg (then known as Benedictine University).
Trivia
He was appointed by Count Leopold Anton von Firmian to work as one of his violinists in 1743.
Some of his most popular compositions were “Sinfonia da Caccia for 4 Horns and Strings” and “Trumpet Concerto in D major”.
