About Leon Douglass
There were many things that Leon Douglass was known for throughout his life. However, he is best known for being one of America’s most powerful businessmen and inventors and made it possible for filmmakers to produce full-colored films.
Business
In 1888, he chanced upon his first phonograph, which caught his attention. A few years later, he received two patents for his phonography inventions.
Throughout the 1890s, Douglass focused on his phonographs and in 1900, he formed a company with his business partner, Eldridge R. Johnson. The Victor Talking Machine Company, which was later, renamed RCA Victor. They manufactured phonographs which become a staple in many homes by the 1900s.
Later Years
After suffering from health issues, Douglass left RCA Victor. He had already started working in film and had produced movies such as “Cupid Angling”, which might possibly be one of the earliest feature-length films in color. He continued to patent other inventions, including a snap cigarette lighter, an underwater camera, and zoom lenses. Douglass died in 1940.
