About Leo Carillo
Leo Carillo, born as Leopoldo Antonio Carillo, was an actor as well as a conservationist. He gained notice for his roles in the movies “The Homicide Squad”, “Men are Such Fools”, “The Band Plays On” and the 1935 drama film “Love me Forever”.
Personal life
He was the son of Juan Jose Carillo and he was related to William Gaxton, who worked in theatre and he served as the president of the Lamb Club for 10 years.
Carillo began a marital relationship with Edith Hesselbarth, with whom he fathered a child.
Career Highlights
Beginning his career in 1915, the California-born actor appeared in about seven theatre productions before making his screen debut. Some stage plays he was involved in are “Upstairs and Down”, “Mike Angelo”, “Gypsy Jim” and “The Saints”.
He made his screen debut in 1929 and he was featured in “Mister Antonio”, a romantic film directed by James Flood. He gained recognition after he made frequent appearances in the America Western television series “The Cisco Kids”. In the series, he was cast as Pancho, appearing alongside Duncan Renaldo.
As a Conservationist, Carrillo worked for 18 years at the California Beach and Park Commission.
Honors
As a result of his great work at the California Beach and Park Commission, the Leo Carrillo State Park was named after him.
The actor received a motion pictures star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Death
He died of cancer at age 81 and he was laid to rest at Santa Monica’s Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery.
Trivia
He was a member of the Republican Party and in 1945, he supported the dismissal of Japanese Americans from the west coast.
