About Larry Doby
Larry Doby is remembered for his immense contributions to professional baseball. The American Major League Baseball player was the second black player to overcome the color barrier in the league just three months after Jackie Robinson landed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He went into the MLB directly from the Negro leagues after signing with the Cleveland Indians, for which he played until 1955. He also had stints with the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers and played in Japan for the Chunichi Dragons in 1962. He coached the Sox in 1978, making him the MLB’s second black manager.
Family Life
He was the son of Etta Brooks and David Doby, a semi-pro baseball player who died at 37 years old in a drowning accident. He was married to Helyn Doby, with whom he had five children. She predeceased him by two years.
Achievements
He is an inductee of the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Guardians Hall of Fame. He was a one-time World Series champion.
Death
He died from cancer on June 18, 2003.
