About Kurt Weill
Kurt Weill started gaining attention in 1922 when he joined the Novembergruppe. Two years later, he met Georg Kaiser and together they completed many projects including the opera buffa titled “Der Zar lässt sich photographieren”.
The German composer recorded most of his successes with playwright Bertolt Brecht with whom he completed perhaps his most popular work entitled “The Threepenny Opera”. His other works such as “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” and “Die Bürgschaft” made him unpopular among the N--is.
Family
He was one of the children of Emma and Albert Weill, and spent his early years with his three siblings. He married Lotte Lenya, an actress, in 1926. The couple divorced in 1933 and reunited four years later.
Education
He graduated from Oberrealschule of Dessau before moving to the Berliner Hochschule für Musik.
Achievements
He won the “Best Composer for the Broadway musical Street Scene” award at the 1947 Tony Awards.
Fun Facts
He abandoned his education after the First World War and joined the Friedrich-Theater where he was a répétiteur.
He started learning how to play the piano at age 12.
Weill was trained by Italian composer Ferruccio Busoni.
In 1943, he became a citizen of the United States.
