About Knud Rasmussen
Knud Rasmussen's legacy continues to exist in countries like Denmark and Greenland. This is due to the sheer impact he had when it came to polar exploration. The polar explorer was famous for being the first European to cross the Northwest Passage using a dog sled.
Personal life
He was born to Christian Rasmussen and Lovise Fleischer.
The Denmark explorer was involved with Dagmar Andessen and shared three children.
As An Explorer
His first exploration lasted for two years, i.e. from 1902 to 1904. It was termed as The Danish Literary Expedition and it included other explorers like Jorgen Bronlund and Harald Moltke.
Together with Peter Freuchen, Rasmussen formed the Thule Trading Station in 1910. The station later became a very popular place for explorers.
"The Thule Expedition" was held from 1912 to 1933 and consisted of seven voyages and his success in the expedition was the fifth one, which was geared towards attacking the great primary problem of the origin of the Eskimo race.
Awards
He was awarded the following prestigious awards: The Royal Geographical Society's Gold Medal and the Daly Medal.
Death
Knud Rasmussen died of Pneumonia.
