About Klemens von Metternich
Born into a noble family, Klemens von Metternich was trained as a lawyer before joining his dad in politics. Due to his high level of education, he served in key diplomatic roles before becoming the Chancellor of the Austrian Empire in 1821. His reign was curtailed by the infamous 1848 Revolutions which affected many European countries.
Before becoming the Chancellor, he was the Empire’s Foreign Minister. While serving in that position, he resolved every feud between the country and other nations, especially France. He also masterminded the country’s participation in the War of the Sixth Coalition.
Family
He was a member of the House of Metternich. His dad, Franz Georg Karl Count Metternich-Winneburg zu Beilstein, was a diplomat. His mother was called Countess Maria Beatrix Aloisia von Kageneck.
Metternich married three times. His first marriage to Princess Eleonore von Kaunitz lasted from 1795 to 1825. He later married Baroness Antoinette Leykam in 1827, but they lived together for two years. His third marriage was to Countess Melanie Zichy-Ferraris whom he married in 1831.
He was blessed with many children which include Melanie Marie Pauline Alexandrine, Richard Klemens Josef Lothar Hermann, and Princess Klementine Maria Octavia von Metternich.
Education
He attended the University of Strasbourg. He also studied at the University of Mainz.
Honors
Metternich received lots of laurels for his services. These honors include: Grand Cross of St. Stephen (Austrian Empire), Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour (Kingdom of France) and Grand Cross of the Red Eagle (Kingdom of Prussia).
