About Kirani James
As a result of the immense contribution he had on athletics in Grenada, Kirani James, Grenada’s first Olympic medalist, was given the honor Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2022 New Year Honors. The Grenadian sprinter is not only a multiple-Olympic medal athlete, but he also won a number of medals at the World Athletics Championships. He has run mostly in the 200 and 400 meters.
Education
Kirani entered Grenada Boys Secondary School where he earned the 2009 Sportsman of the Year and then accepted an athletic scholarship from the University of Alabama.
Best Performances and Accomplishments
In 2007, Kirani set a record as the fastest 400-meter runner under age 14 during the World Youth Championship and also finished 400m at 47.86 seconds to win a gold medal in the CARIFTA Games. At the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India, he finished first to take home the gold medal in the 400 m race.
He then won silver medals at the 2008 World Junior Championships at 21.38 minutes in the 200 meters. .
During the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, he became the youngest 400m champion to finish in 44.6 seconds. Four years later, at the 2015 Beijing World Championships, he won the 400 m bronze medal.
Among other impressive records, the Caribbean Journal named Kirani and Usain Bolt Co-Sportsmen of the Year 2012.
He won the 400m final in 44.24 in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to take home the gold medal.
He won a medal in the 400 m in three consecutive Olympic Games; the first, which was a gold, came at the 2012 London Olympics. At the 2016 and 2020 Games, he won silver and bronze, respectively.
