About Kim Campbell
Kim Campbell, born Avril Phaedra Douglas is a politician and the first female politician to hold the position as Canada’s Prime Minister. She reigned for only one hundred and thirty-two (132) days which is ranked as one of the shortest reigns ever in the history of Canada.
Background and Early Life
She was raised in Vancouver. At the age of 10, she was a co-host and a reporter with four other pre-teens of the program, “Junior Television Club” which was broadcast on CBC television.
During her teenage days, she nicknamed herself Kim. Campbell attended Prince of Wales Secondary School and graduated in 1964. She was the first female student president of the school.
Career
In 1969, she graduated from the University of British Columbia where she studied B.A Political Science. At the university, she was an active student politician and was elected as the first female president of the freshman class.
In 1970, she enrolled at London School of Economics where she read Soviet Government (PhD). In 1983, she earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of British Columbia. The following year, Campbell was called to the Bar of British Columbia.
She practiced law until 1986 when she was elected as a Socred member to the British Columbia Legislative Assembly for Vancouver-Point Grey district. In 1988, she was elected as a member of parliament for Vancouver Centre district during the federal election. Later, Campbell became a Minister of State to the British Columbia cabinet.
She served as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General from 1990-1993. In 1993, she was then asked to serve as the Minister of National Defence. On June 25 that same year, Campbell was appointed as the first female Canadian Prime Minister by Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn. Unfortunately, in November the same year, she was defeated during the 1993 Canadian federal election.
Family Life
Campbell is the daughter of George Thomas Campbell and Phyllis Margaret. She had a sister called Alix. She got married to Nathan Divinsky in 1972 but divorced him in 1983. In 1986, she again married Howard Eddy.
Honors
She was awarded with the “125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal” by the Monarch of Canada. She also won “Companion of the Order of Canada” by the same Monarch in 2008.
