About Ken Curtis
Ken Curtis was the stage name of American actor and singer Curtis Wain Gates. Prior to his career in acting, he had performed vocals in bands by Tommy Dorsey and Shep Fields in the early 1940s.
He made his acting debut in 1945 after signing a contract with Columbia Pictures. His first acting role was in the 1945 film, “Rhythm Round-Up” as Jimmy Benson. He was known best for starring as Festus Haggen on the popular Western drama series, “Gunsmoke” from 1964 to 1975.
Family Life
He grew up with two elder brothers in Colorado, where his father, Dan Sullivan Gates would serve as the sheriff of Bent County from 1927 to 1931. His mother’s name was Nellie Sneed. He was married three times and had two children.
Death
He was 74 years old when he died of a heart attack in his sleep on 28 April 1991.
