Background and Education
The San Francisco-born had his high school education at Terra Nova High School in Pacifica. However, he later transferred to Capuchino High School in San Bruno, California. After high school, he attended the College of San Mateo in California.
Career
He was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals at the age of 16. His first professional appearance was in the minor leagues with the Tulsa Oilers. During his period with the St. Louis Cardinals, he posted a .333 average with five home runs. He was traded to the New York Jets in 1983. He played with them from 1983 to 1989. He ended his playing career in 1990 with the Cleveland Indians. He went into the entertainment industry after baseball. He was on shows: “Seinfeld”, “Law and Order” and “Ghostwriter”. He also made an appearance in the movies: “The Scout” and “The Ghostwriter”. After retiring, he secured a job as a baseball commentator for the Mets television broadcast.
Achievements
The former baseball player chalked up the following achievements:
- He won 11 consecutive Gold Gloves Award from 1978 to 1988 at first base.
- He bagged the National League MVP award in 1979 along with Willie Stargell.
- In 1997, he was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame.
