About Katherine Johnson
Katherine Johnson was a renowned mathematician and physicist from America known for her illustrious career with NASA. Her most notable role as an employee of NASA was successfully performing extremely complex mathematical calculations that helped the agency make successful spaceflights.
She is widely regarded as one of the very first African-American NASA scientists.
Achievements
Throughout her distinguished career, she received several prestigious awards. For example, in 2015, then American President, Barack Obama honored her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom (which is America's most important civilian award).
In 2016, she was also awarded NASA's Silver Snoopy Award.
She also received the coveted Congressional Gold Medal from the United States Congress in 2019.
Personal Life
She and James F. Goble got married in 1939. From this marriage (which ended with Goble's demise in 1956), she mothered three children. Her second and final marriage was to James Johnson in 1959. She and Johnson remained married for six decades until his demise in 2019.
Death
Katherine passed away at the age of 101 in an old age home on the 24th of February, 2020. She left behind six grandchildren and a total of 11 great-grandchildren.
