About Karl Menninger
Karl Menninger was a popular American psychiatrist, best known as one of the originators of the Menninger Foundation. The organization, which was created in 1941, has been described as the first notable group dedicated to psychiatry. It was established with a school for psychiatry, clinic, and a sanatorium.
He also played a key role in the formation of Topeka’s Winter Veterans Administration Hospital after the Second World War. He went on to establish the Menninger School of Psychiatry in 1946. The school would later be named the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry and Mental Health Science.
Family
He was one of the children of physician Charles Frederick Menninger, and had a brother named Will Menninger. Before divorcing Grace Gaines in 1941, the couple had three children called Martha, Robert, and Julia. He later married Jeanette Lyle and together they adopted a child called Rosemary.
Education
Menninger was a product of Harvard Medical School. He was also a student of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Washburn University, and Indiana University.
Accolades
President Jimmy Carter awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981.
Death
His demise was caused by abdominal cancer.
Trivia
The Menninger School of Psychiatry, which is located in Topeka, Kansas, was named after him.
He was also a writer and published many books including “The Human Mind” and “The Crime of Punishment”.
