Sir Karl William Pamp Jenkins is a musician best known for works such as “Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary” and “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace.”
Early Life and Career
Growing up, the Welsh musician learnt how to play the piano from his father. He went on to study music at Cardiff University before completing his music studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Jenkins initially found his footing in jazz, and in 1969 formed a group called Nucleus. His group recorded three albums and won their first prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival. He later joined the jazz-rock band, Soft Machine.
In the 1980s, he established himself as a composer, creating music for advertisements for major companies such as British Airways, Renault, and De Beers. His classical piece “Adiemus” also topped the charts and brought him global recognition.
Achievements and Recognition
In 2015, Jenkins was awarded a knighthood (i.e. the Order of the British Empire) during the Queen’s Birthday Honors for his contributions to classical music. That same year, he was also recognized as the most popular living composer by Classic FM and received the Classic FM “Red f” award for his services to classical music.
He also has a doctorate in music from the University of Wales and is a fellow and associate of the Royal Academy of Music.
