About Julio Cortázar
Julio Cortázar was a celebrated Argentine novelist, essayist and short story writer remembered for such notable works as his 1963 novel Hopscotch (Rayuela) and 1968’s Blow-up and Other Stories (End of the Game and Other Stories). He was awarded the prestigious French literary award Prix Médicis in 1974 for his novel Libro de Manuel (A Manual for Manuel).
Family Life
He was born to Maria Descotte and Julio José Cortázar. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Aurora Bernárdez from 1953 to 1967. His second marriage was to Carol Dunlop in 1981. The marriage ended with Carol’s death in 1982.
Trivia
His short story Las babas del Diablo (The Devil's Drool) inspired the 1966 film Blowup.
Despite his cause of death being reported as leukemia, there were other reports that his death was caused by AIDS.
