About Julian Bond
Julian Bond began showing traits of a good leader during his days in college. He played a key role in the formation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the 1960s. In 1967, he was elected into the prestigious Georgia House of Representatives and served in the House for four terms. He later became the Senator of the Georgia State in 1975 and served until 1987.
Other works
The American politician gained lots of admirers for his civil rights activism. He was one of the leaders of the 1950s political group known as the American Civil Rights Movement. In 1971, he played a major role in the establishment of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
He was appointed the leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1998, a position he served until 2010.
Family
He was the son of renowned American historian and researcher Horace Mann Bond and his wife Julia Agnes Washington. He married Alice Clopton in 1961 with whom he had five kids. The couple divorced in 1989 and he later became the husband of Pamela Sue Horowitz.
Education
After completing his education at George School, he moved to the Atlanta-based Morehouse College.
Recognitions
The National Civil Rights Museum honored him with the National Freedom Award in 2002. Four years later, he received the National LGBTQ Task Force’s “National Leadership Award”.
Trivia
Eduardo Montes-Bradley made a documentary about him in 2012 which was titled “Julian Bond: Reflections from the Frontlines of the Civil Rights Movement”.
In 1977, he was named as a host of the television show “Saturday Night Live”.
