As a teen, he hijacked a handful of secure systems, including NASA and the Pentagon, under the hacking alias "Mendax." He was charged by the Australian authorities with 31 counts of cybercrime in 1991, and he pleaded guilty to the majority of them.
Wikileaks published nearly 500,000 documents obtained from US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning in 2010, mostly relating to the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; labeled a terrorist by the U.S government.
Beginning in 2019, Assange was held at Britain's high-security Belmarsh Prison in London. Because so much time had passed, Sweden dropped the sex crimes investigations in November 2019.
Achievements
He received the Sydney Peace Foundation’s gold medal for his "exceptional courage in pursuit of human rights", an honor previously bestowed on exceptional people like anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama in May 2011.
