About Jules Ferry
Jules Francois Camille Ferry, a statesman and philosopher, was France's prime minister from 1880 - 1881 and from 1883 - 1885. He was a revered statesman up until 1885, when the public's disapproval of the Sino-French War and his unpopularity drove him to quit.
Early Life
He pursued legal studies and was admitted to the Paris bar in 1855.
Career
He gained notoriety for being a scathing opponent of the Second Empire, especially after writing articles (1867–68) critical of Baron George–Eugène Haussmann's leadership in the daily Le Temps.
In 1870, he was selected as Paris' mayor. Despite his unpopularity, Vosges elected him to the Senate (1891) before going on to serve as president of the French Senate in 1893.
Demise
A lunatic named Aubertin shot him, and he succumbed to the wound on March 17, 1893.
Accomplishments
Through various new legislation, he made primary education both free and required. Colonial expansion of French territories like Tunisia (1881) and Madagascar (1885).
Trivia
He was nicknamed “Ferry-la-Famine”.
