About Józef Piłsudski
Considered to be the father of independent Poland in modern history, Józef Piłsudski is credited for his contribution in the creation of the Second Polish Republic in 1918. For 123 years (1795-1918), Poland had lost its sovereignty and Pilsudski’s involvement in the First World War with Polish troops eventually led to the country’s independence. After the war, he served as the Chief of State from 1918 to 1922. He retired from politics in 1923. In 1926, he carried out a coup that overthrew the democratically-elected government. He served as the Prime Minister of Poland from 1926 to 1928.
