About Joshua Wong
Joshua Wong is a Hong Kong politician and student activist who made a name for himself particularly in the latter regard during his youth. Indeed even before reaching the age of 20 he had established himself as one of the most-influential activists in the entire world.
Family Life
His parents are named Roger and Grace Wong.
Achievements
In 2011 he founded a pro-democracy NGO called Scholarism which grew into a mass movement.
He was instrumental in the Hong Kong protests, aka the Umbrella Movement, of 2014 as well as later massive protests which hit the city in 2019.
He was nominated by Time magazine for Person of the Year in 2014, ultimately coming in third place based on a reader poll.
In 2016 he founded a pro-democracy political party called Demosistō.
Being recognized as one of the leaders of the Umbrella Movement, Wong was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2018.
He has received other awards and accolades. For instance, in 2015 he was named as one of the “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders”, coming in 10th place, by Fortune magazine.
In 2019 he spoke at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
Wong has put together quite a writing résumé, having composed articles for publications such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and Time magazine.
Trivia
He has been arrested numerous times throughout the years. And partially due to his police record, he has not been able to fully pursue his aspirations of becoming an elected official.
In mid-2020 he and the other leaders of Demosistō disbanded the organization due to a controversial and ambiguous anti-dissident law China passed over Hong Kong.
