About Josephine Cochrane
Josephine Cochrane was the first person to create a commercially successful dishwashing machine. She began her invention in the 1880s and made it known to the public in 1893 at the World's Colombian Exposition which was held in Chicago.
She was granted a patent for her invention in 1885 and established the Garis-Cochrane Manufacturing Company the following years. The firm was acquired by Hobart Manufacturing Company in 1913 and began operating under the name KitchenAid. The organization would later be known as Whirlpool.
Family
Her original name was Josephine Garis and was born to Irene Fitch Garis and her civil engineer husband John Garis. She had two kids with William Cochran whom she got married to in 1858. Their children were called Katharine and Hallie.
Honors
In 2006, she was posthumously selected into the famous National Inventors Hall of Fame.
Trivia
George Butters, a local mechanic, helped her to create her first dishwashing machine.
