About Joseph Warren
Dr. Joseph Warren was a spymaster, a soldier and a significant character in Boston's Patriot movement during the early stages of the American Revolution. On June 17, 1775, he lost his life as a martyr at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Background
He completed Harvard in 1759 and studied medicine in Boston. He tied the knot with Elizabeth Hooten in 1764. The marriage lasted until Elizabeth’s death in 1773.
Heroics in the American Revolution
Warren took over fellow Founding Father of the United States Samuel Adams' leadership duties and got involved in the organization of militias in 1774. On June 14, 1775, the Provincial Congress named him second general in charge of the Massachusetts soldiers.
When he discovered that British forces had arrived at Charlestown on June 17, he rode to Breed's Hill to warn the others. Serving as an ordinary soldier, he attempted to rally the militia during the third and final British attack near the redoubt but was slain by a ball between the eyes. The physician and American Patriot was 34 at the time of his death.
This Founding Father of the United States left behind four children.
