About Joseph Pulitzer
Pulitzer József was born to Jewish parents and became a newspaper publisher and politician. He was a Hungarian-American. His father had a good reputation in their town and was a merchant who became well to do. He studied German and French and was also tutored privately. When his father died, however, the family business collapsed and the family began to struggle financially.
Career
To make ends meet, he decided to enroll in the army. He tried the Austrian army, British Army and French army but was not given a chance to join. Germany allowed him to join their army but when he came to the realization that his payment was being reduced, he left for New York. There, he got to join Sheridan’s Troopers which was part of the first New York Cavalry Regiment.
Even though he was desperate to get a job, his thin appearance made it difficult to get jobs which required strength. He started working with the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. He became a member of the Republican Party in 1869 when he was about twenty-two years old. When the party needed someone to be in the state legislature, they ended up settling on Joseph even though he was too young according to their laws. Over time, he became wealthy and got married but died in October 1911.
Trivia
He was also involved in philanthropic works and one of his very popular deeds as a philanthropist is donating a sum of 2 million dollars to help establish the world’s first journalism school, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
