In 2009, he ran for President as a member of the Broad Front party. He won and took office in 2010. He is considered a humble, altruistic President as he gives away 90% of his salary to those in need. He lives a very humble and simple lifestyle.
Personal
Jose married fellow Tupamaros member and politician, Lucia Topolansky. They enjoy a very simple life living on a farm on the outskirts of the city and growing flowers. They drive a 1987 Volkswagon and have a 3-legged dog named Manuela.
