About José Luis Chilavert
José Luis Chilavert is a retired Paraguayan soccer player who operated as a goalkeeper. During his career, Chilavert scored a total of 46 goals which made him one of the highest-scoring goalkeepers in the history of the sport. He mostly scored from free kicks and penalty kicks.
Career Highlights
He started his professional career in 1982 as a signee of Sportivo Luqueño in his native country. He later joined Club Guaraní before moving to Argentina to sign for San Lorenzo. After two years with Spanish side Real Zaragoza, Chilavert joined Vélez Sarsfield in 1991. With the team, he won three Primera División titles, an Intercontinental Cup, and the Copa Libertadores. He also played for teams like Strasbourg in France, and Peñarol in Uruguay.
International Career
Chilavert spent over a decade with the Paraguayan senior national team in which he earned 74 caps. He played as the captain of the side during the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup competitions. He also played in the Copa América on many occasions.
Family
He’s the son of Nicolasa González and Catalino Chilavert. His brother Rolando Chilavert also played soccer at the professional level. He and Marcela had a daughter in 1998 called Anahí.
Achievements
He was named IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper three times. In 1996, he won the trophy for Argentine “Footballer of the Year”. He won the Equipo Ideal de América from 1994 to 1999. This famous soccer player has been named in World Soccer’s “100 Greatest Footballers of All Time”.
