About Johns Hopkins
Johns Hopkins was an American millionaire merchant, entrepreneur, and one of the greatest philanthropists of the USA. His will left a large capital which founded the well known “Johns Hopkins University” and “Johns Hopkins Hospital.”
Background & Early Life
His family’s house was at “Whitehall,” a 200ha tobacco plantation in Crofton, Maryland. At age 12, Hopkins quit school to work on the plantation after his parents’ slaves had left.
At age 17, he left the fieldwork and went to stay with his wealthy uncle in Baltimore. There, he worked at a wholesale grocery enterprise with his uncle. He did very well with the business and impressed his uncle very much. He later began his own business with three of his brothers.
Business Career
Hopkins and his brothers prospered in wealth, as they became the leading grocery merchants in Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and Ohio. They accepted payments with whiskey, which Hopkin’s later sold as “Hopkin’s Best” and earned him more wealth.
He made considerable investments in Baltimore’s real estate and other businesses. In addition, he was the director of several banks, insurance companies, and warehouses in the mid to late 1800s.
Philanthropy
His bequest was used to establish the “Johns Hopkins Colored Children Orphan Asylum” in 1875, “Johns Hopkins University” in 1876, and “Johns Hopkins Hospital” in 1889.
