About John Wilkes Booth
The Murderer
John Wilkes Booth was an American stage actor who is notoriously known for assassinating President Abraham Lincoln of the United States of America, shooting him at the back of the head while in attendance at the Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. in 1865. Booth strongly opposed the abolition of the slavery system in the United States, which made him at odds with Lincoln’s administration. Booth was part of a group whose original plan was to kidnap Lincoln along with Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William H. Seward; he was the only one to successfully carry out his mission, although in a bloodier outcome than originally intended.
On Stage
His political views aside, Booth was a successful stage actor, performing in plays like Richard III, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and The Lady of Lyons during the 1850s and 1860s.
