About John Smoltz
1995 World Series Champion and 8-time All-star player John Andrew Smoltz is a former American baseball pitcher who played in the major leagues from 1988 to 2009. As of 2021, Smoltz is also the only pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB) to secure 200 wins and 150 saves.
Personal Life
Smoltz was born to Mary and John Adam Smoltz. He spent most of his youth playing baseball for his school, Waverly High School, after which the Detroit Tigers selected him in 1985.
Baseball Career and Notable Accomplishments
John Smoltz made his MLB debut in 1988 but unfortunately started with a bad form. Despite the setback, Smoltz excelled and won the national league in 1996. Although a starter, Smoltz was also a great reliever and set a National League record in 2002 to become the only pitcher to record 20 wins and 50 saves. He has played for teams like the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, and St. Louis Cardinals.
The Braves Hall of Famer, received the Roberto Clemente Award in 2005. And for his efforts while playing for the Atlanta Braves, his number 29 shirt was retired.
Personal Life
Smoltz married Kathryn Dryden in 2009 after he divorced his first wife, Dyan Struble, whom he married in 1990. He has 5 children as of 2021.
