About John Romero
Born Alfonso John Romero, he is a brilliant American game developer and designer. He has achieved great heights in the video game industry and is best known for co-founding “id Software LLC.”
Early Career
He began coding and developing games in the 1980s on his Apple II computer. A clone for the “Crazy Climber” game was his first developed and unpublished game. He created “Jumpster” in 1983, and in 1987, it became his first published game.
In 1987, he got his first industry work at Origin Systems. He later co-founded Inside Out Software and briefly designed Dark Castle for Apple’s IIGS computer. In 1989, he relocated to Shreveport, Louisiana, and took a job as a programmer at Softdisk.
Id Software
After working with Softdisk for two years, he left in 1991 to help establish id Software. As a co-founder, he made immense contributions to the success of the company’s software. In addition, he designed many of its games, including “Dangerous Dave,” “Wolfenstein 3D,” “Quake,” and “Doom, Doom II.”
Romero’s unique game designs, along with John D. Carmacks’s (lead programmer) programming skills, led to the enormous publicity of First-person shooter (FPS) in the 1990s. However, after a disagreement with Carmack in 1996, he resigned from id Software.
Legacy
He is credited for creating the term “deathmatch,” popularly used in FPS multiplayer.
