About John Prescott
Before joining politics John Prescott, was a very active trade unionist. He began his political journey in 1970 as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Hull East. Due to his leadership qualities and charisma, he was selected as the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party in 1994. Three years later, he was appointed the United Kingdom’s Deputy Prime Minister. He served in that position for a decade.
He became a member of Britain's House of Lords in 2010 after retiring as an MP. He contested for the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner position in 2012 but lost to Matthew Grove of the Conservative Party.
Controversies
Prescott has been involved in a number of scandals. In 2006, he admitted that he had a romantic affair with his secretary named Tracey Temple.
Health issues
In 1990, it was confirmed that he was suffering from diabetes. He was later admitted to the University College Hospital after he was said to be suffering from pneumonia. He suffered a stroke in 2019 and was sent to Hull Royal Infirmary for treatment.
Family
His dad, John Herbert Prescott, was also a member of the Labour Party. His mum was simply known as Phyllis. He has been married to Pauline Tilston since 1961. The couple have two kids named David Prescott, and Johnathan Prescott.
Education
He began his formal education at Brinsworth Manor School and continued at Rotherham Grammar School, as well as, Grange Secondary Modern School. He studied economic history and economics at the University of Hull. He also attended Ruskin College.
Trivia
He appeared on BBC Radio 4’s “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists” in 2018.
