About John Paxson
John Paxson is a former American basketball player. After his retirement he served six years as general manager and close to eleven years as the vice president of the NBA.
Education and Early Career
While in Archbishop Alter High School in Ohio, he played for University of Dayton and later for the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA. In his final year at high school, he was signed to the 1979 McDonald’s All-American Team.
At the university of Notre Dame he played for the Fighting Irish in the 1980/81 season, leaving impressive records such as the 8th highest steals and the 19th highest points of 1,366 in the school’s history at the time.
He graduated with a business administration degree with 3.17 GPA in 1983.
NBA Career
He played for San Antonio Spurs in the 1983 NBA Draft before moving to Chicago Bulls as a free agent. There he played with Michael Jordan in the backcourt position.
Off-Court Career
He was assistant coach at the Bulls in 1995/96 season when they won the NBA on Jordan’s return. Thereafter, he resigned to work in broadcasting on radio with Neil Funk.
He returned to the Bulls in 2003 to serve as general manager where his policies were unsatisfactory as the team failed five playoffs and lost seven times in the first round, among others. He was made the senior advisor in 2020 after Arturas was appointed executive vice president.
Records and Honors
He was made a member of the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 2006.
Paxson’ records in the NBA include his winning shot during the NBA Finals in 1993.
He won three consecutive cups with the Bulls in the 1989-1994 seasons.
