About John Osborne
John James Osborne was an English playwright, actor and screenwriter best known for his scathing criticisms against established political and social practices. His 1965 play “Look Back in Anger” played a crucial role in transforming English theatre.
Life and Career
Osborne was born in Fulham, West London to his parents, Thomas and Nellie. As a young boy, he attended a public school in Devon, where he was expelled at 15 for hitting the headmaster.
He started working in English theatre as an actor when he turned 18. This opportunity allowed to tour England and perform in a number of plays, and his exposure to English social norms became the foundation for most themes in his later works.
Osborne wrote his first play “The Devil Inside Him” in 1949. However, it was “Look Back in Anger” that brought his work public recognition. He wrote plays throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and earned the reputation for his blunt and often harsh social comments. He was quickly named the “angry young man.”
Personal Life
He married five times throughout his lifetime. Most of his romantic endeavors had been tainted by betrayal and violence. However, it was with his fifth wife, Helen Dawson, who proved to be the most stable. His close associations to gay men also led to the public questioning his sexuality. Osborne denied the rumors, saying that he enjoyed exploring homosexuality in his plays
Death
He spent his final years in Shropshire before passing away in December 1994, aged 65.
