About John Milne
John Milne was an English geologist credited with the creation of the modern-day seismograph.
Early Years & Career
Milne studied Applied Science at King’s College London and later attended the Royal School of Mines. Between 1873 and 1874, he worked as a mining engineer and was sent to Canada to search for mineral resources.
The following year, he accepted a teaching job at the Imperial College of Engineering in Tokyo, Japan. During that time, he developed the early concepts of the seismograph and travelled extensively throughout the Asian country to establish seismological surveys to study its earthquakes.
Back in England, he joined the Royal Society and encouraged them to fund various earthquake observatories worldwide, using his seismograph. These centers provided information to help him conduct research and he released the book, “Earthquakes and Other Earth Movements” in 1898.
Milne continued his research and delivered lectures until his death in 1913.
