John le Carré was a renowned British author of espionage fiction, widely known for his 1963 international bestselling spy novel titled The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. His other notable novels include 1974's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and 1993's The Night Manager. He is regarded as one of the greatest British writers of his generation.

In 1954, he got married to Alison Ann and fathered three sons with her. The marriage ended in 1971. His second marriage was to Valérie Jane in 1972. The marriage produced his fourth son.
