About John Laurens
John Laurens was an American soldier who contributed massively to the American Revolutionary War. He is remembered for his attempts at recruiting African-American slaves to fight in the War as soldiers. Although his plan was given the go-ahead by Continental Congress, it could not materialize because of his political opponents. He is also known for his criticism of slavery although his own father was an owner of slaves.
Family Life
He was the son of Henry Laurens, a rice planter who also co-owned a slave trading house, and Eleanor Ball. He had two brothers: James and Henry Jr. and two sisters, Mary and Martha. He was sent to London at 16 years old to study. He later married Martha Manning in October 1776. Their daughter, Frances Eleanor Laurens, was born in January 1777.
Death
He died from wounds sustained when the British fired shots at him while on his horse during the Battle of Combahee River on 27 August, 1782. He was only 27.
