About John L. Sullivan
Just like his nickname given by the press “Boston Strong Boy” alluded to, John Lawrence Sullivan’s strength was instrumental in his recognition as the world’s first gloved boxer to become a heavyweight champion. He also fought bare-knuckled and he earned recognition as the final bare-knuckled heavyweight champion.
He became a superstar boxer and is credited with the development and popularization of sports journalism in the United States. He never fought again after his only defeat to Jim Corbett in 1892.
Family Life
He was the son of the Irish immigrant couple Catherine Kelly and Michael Sullivan. He was married twice: first to Katherine Harkins in 1883 and then to Nellie Revelle in 1907.

Out of 51 professional boxing matches, he won 47, drew 2 and lost just one.
Death
He died from heart disease on February 2, 1918.
