He was of Jewish and Irish descent and was born in Bucharest, Romania. However, he lived in London for most of his childhood and was educated at Clifton College. He immigrated to the USA in 1925, where he began a career in theatre acting.
Career Highlights
In the 1930s, he co-wrote and directed several Broadway performances and plays, including "Four Saints in Three Acts (1934)" and "Valley Forge". He moved to Hollywood in the 1940s and eventually produced over 15 feature films.
He became renowned for his high-profile partnership with film director Orson Welles on the "Federal Theatre Project" and "Citizen Kane". He also had a notable script play collaboration with Raymond Chandler on "The Blue Dahlia" film.
As an actor, Houseman is best recognized for playing the character of Professor Charles in the 1973 film "The Paper Chase", for which he earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. In addition, he was known for his "Smith Barney" advertisements.
Death
The veteran film star died from spinal cancer, aged 86, on October 31, 1988.
