John Harvard was a well-known English religious figure who willed a huge portion of his estates to the establishment of the Harvard College, and has been described as one of the founders of the institution.
Is John Harvard the founder of Harvard University?
Harvard moved to Massachusetts in the 1630s where he started working as a preacher. He was made a freeman in 1638 and was given a huge parcel of land. A couple of years to his death, he willed half of his estate, making a total of £780, to a school owned by the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Due to his generosity, the college was named after him.
Family
He inherited some fortunes from his parents Katherine Rogers and Robert Harvard. He had eight other siblings, and was married to Ann Sadler.
Education
He studied at the Emmanuel College of the University of Cambridge.
Death
He contracted tuberculosis which later caused his death in 1638.
Trivia
A bronze sculpture of him, designed by Daniel Chester French, has been erected at the Harvard Yard on the campus of the Harvard University.
London’s John Harvard Library was named after him.
