Background & Early Life

Career & Major Works
In 1849, his work on the “Christ in the House of His Parents” paintings garnered huge attraction and several controversies, making him the most famous figure of the “Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood.” In 1851, he produced “Ophelia,” a picture that served as an embodiment of the history of his artistic movement. He also created the famous “A Huguenot” painting in 1851.
Between 1881 and 1882, he was the president of the “Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.”
By the late 1850s, he had become distant from his “Pre-Raphaelite” style and had begun to develop some realism and uniqueness in his art.
