About John Carney
Born in Hartford in Connecticut, he was named John Michael Carney. He played football and played in the position of placekicker. He was a student of Cardinal Newman High School. He played football in school and as a punter, he won All State honors. He continued his education with Notre Dame. He started a training camp named “The Launching Pad” for professional kickers.
Career
He started his career as an undrafted free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals. In 1988, he played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers till 1989 before he moved to San Diego Chargers. He played eleven seasons with them. He became their all-time leading scorer. He joined the New Orleans Saints in 2001 as a free agent. In 2007, he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars where he took the place of Josh Scobee who was injured. When Josh returned, he left and joined the Kansas City Chiefs. He played football for about three decades.
Achievements
His exploits during his time at Notre Dame earned him a place on Sports Illustrated’s all-time team of the school.
