About John C. Calhoun
John Caldwell Calhoun was an American political theorist and statesman who became the seventh vice president of the United States between 1825 and 1832. He was notorious for his strong defense of slavery and for promoting the political interests of the white South.
Family Life
Calhoun was born to Patrick Calhoun and Martha Caldwell. He married Floride Bonneau Colhoun in 1811 and had 10 children including, Andrew Pickens, Jane, Elizabeth, John Caldwell Jr., Martha Cornelia, William Lowndes, and James Edward.
Achievements
He served as vice president under John Quincy Adams from 1825 to 1829 and under Andrew Jackson from 1829 to 1832.
He served as the Secretary of War under former President James Monroe from 1817 to 1825.
He was named by John F. Kennedy as one of the five greatest senators of all-time.
Trivia
In a 1997 film, titled Amistad, which showcased the battle surrounding slavery and some captives who rebelled in 1839 on the La Amistad ship, actor Arliss Howard portrayed Calhoun.
Several streets, schools and places have been named after him.
From 1844 to 1845, he served as Secretary of State under John Tyler’s administration.
His last words, prior to his death in 1850 after battling with Tuberculosis are “The South, the poor South”.
