About John Bunyan
The British, John Bunyan, was a 17th century writer and a protestant evangelist. He was known for his Christian books including “Gospel Truths Opened” in 1656, “The Pilgrim's Progress” in 1678, and “Saved by Grace” in 1675.
Personal Life
Bunyan was the child of Thomas Bunyan and Margaret. In 1658, he married his second wife, Elizabeth. He had six children named Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah and Joseph. Bunyan was a tinker, a trade he learnt from his father.
In the early 1650s, he was inspired by a group of women from the Bedford Free Church. As a result of that, he joined the church and started preaching. In 1660, under the Religion Act 1592, Bunyan was arrested and jailed for three months.
He was made a pastor at the Bedford Meeting in 1671.
In 1676, he was again jailed for refusing to join the Parish Church.
Death
On 31st of August, 1688, Bunyan died of fever.
Trivia
John’s three months sentence in 1660 was increased to 12 years when he refused to worship at the Parish Church.
His wife delivered prematurely when she heard of his arrest.
He was once a soldier.
