About John Ashbery
The former Pulitzer Prize winner published over 25 books of poetry in his very long career. Notable among his collection were “A Wave” and “Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror”. He once listed W.H. Auden and Jasper Johns as some of his influences.
Early Life
Born in Rochester, New York, he obtained a master’s degree from Columbia University in 1951. In 1965, he taught poetry and creative writing at Brooklyn College.
Literary Work
His poems were usually described as difficult as they seemed incoherent and inconclusive. From the 1960s, he published a series of successful poems, including “The Double Dream of Spring” and “Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror”. The latter is generally considered one of his masterpieces. He co-wrote a novel titled “A Nest of Ninnies” with poet James Schuyler.
Personal Life
Until his death in 2017, he was married to his partner, David Kermani.
Awards & Honors
He was honored with a National Humanities Medal in 2011 and was inducted into the New York Writers Hall of Fame in the same year.
