Johann Christian Bach, also known as the “English Bach,” was a brilliant and highly influential German composer during the early “Classical Era.” He also made many contributions to the development of the modern sonata principle.
Background & Early Life
He was a Leipzig native and was born to the famous German composer Johann Sebastian and singer Anna Magdalena Bach.
Bach received his early musical education from his father and uncles. However, in 1754 at age 20, he moved to Italy and eventually became the student of the Italian composer Padre Martini.
Career Highlights
As a Catholic, Bach devoted himself to composing music for the Catholic Church, including songs for Requiem Mass celebrations. In 1757, he received massive acclaim for his first major performance in a Mass. He then traveled to London, England, in 1762 and premiered several operas at the “King’s Theatre” and eventually became the leading composer for the theatre.
In 1767, he launched his series of performances with the renowned viola da gamba instrumentalist Karl Friedrich Abel. He later became the music master to “Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz,” and achieved high status as an elite composer.
Controversies
In 1777, he won the landmark copyright case “Bach v Longman.”
