About Joe Thornton
Joseph Eric Thorton, popularly called Joe Thornton or “Jumbo Joe,” is a Canadian ice hockey player. He has over two and half decades of experience in ice hockey, playing in the NHL, OHL, OMHA, WOHL, and NLA. In addition, he has won several honors with the Canadian national hockey team.
Amateur Career
He played amateur hockey at St. Thomas Stars. In the 1995-96 OHL season, he was named the CHL and OHL Rookie of the Year. He was also included in the OHL Second All-Star Team of the 1996-97 season.
He was Boston Bruins first overall pick during the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
Professional Career
Just after OHL, Thorton spent seven consecutive seasons with Boston Bruins in the NHL. He was also their captain in three of those seasons. He was then sold to the Sharks in 2005. Thorton then went on to play 14 consecutive NHL seasons at the Sharks and was team captain when they lost in the Stanley Cup Finals (2016). As of 2021, he had made over 1600 NHL match appearances and played for the Florida Panthers.
Major Honors
He was part of the Canadian team that won the 2004 and 2016 World Cup of Hockey. As of 2021, he was the only ice hockey player to win the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Art Ross Trophy in the same year (2006).
