This New York native is well known for his exclamation "Ooo! Ooo!". The comedian became popular for his role as Officer Gunther Toody in the sitcom “Car 54, Where Are You?” and Botch in “Help!... It's the Hair Bear Bunch.”
Background
Ross was born Joseph Roszawikz to Jewish immigrants. He dropped out of school at the age of 16 to become a singing waitress and was soon promoted to be a comedian for the club. His first major acting role was in “Teaserama”, a 1955 theatrical film directed and produced by Irving Klaw.
Career
Ross caught the attention of film producers Nat Hiken and Phil Silvers who offered him a spot in their show “The Phil Silvers Show” as Rupert Ritzik. This was where he adopted the exclamation "Ooo! Ooo!" which became his signature line. He worked with Hiken again on the sitcom, “Car 54, Where Are You?” and featured in over 15 television shows including fan favorite “The Love Boat.”
Death
This comedic genius died in 1982 from a heart attack.
