Joseph Klewan was born in New York City and was a comedian, singer and actor.
Career
He featured in “Too Many Husbands” which was a comedy show. In 1937, he starred in “The Holy Terror” then went on to play himself in “Lady in Cement” in 1968. He made a few appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show”.
Personal Life
He got married to Martha Stewart in 1946 but the marriage did not survive and ended in two years.
Attack
In the 1920’s, Al Capone was part owner of the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge and Joseph was asked by Jack “Machine Gun” McGurn who was a lieutenant of Al Capone to sing and have a performance at the venue but he turned them down because he had been paid to perform at “The New Rendezvous” which belonged to a rival gang. Mcgurn sent some people to assault him. They cut up his tongue and throat and left after they thought he was dead. He recovered after years. Because Al Capone liked him and was not in favor of the abuse, he offered him ten thousand dollars ($10,000) for treatment and recovery.
Death
In 1971, He suffered a heart attack and died.
